Teknaf, Bangladesh: A meeting of Bangladesh-Myanmar seventh Joint Working Group for Border Trade was held at Teknaf Central Resort on June 22, at around 10:00 am and completed around 2:15 pm, according to official of JWGBTO from Teknaf.
“From Bangladesh side, a team of 19 persons was led by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mr. Mohammed Nurul Boshir of Cox’s Bazar district while U Soe Win Maung, the deputy Director of Border Trade association led the 18 persons from Burma side.”
From Bangladesh side, Teknaf upazila Nirbahi officer Sha Mujahid Uddin, Bangladesh land port officer, BGB officers, Teknaf Shunali Bank officer, Land port immigration officers, Bangladesh frozen food association officer, officer of CNF agent association, businessmen, officers of Teknaf United Land Port Limited were participated in the meeting.
The first Bangladesh-Myanmar Joint Working Group for Border Trade meeting was held on May 2, 2011 at Teknat Rest House and the second meeting was held at Maungdaw Town on July 9, 2011. The last 6th JWGBTO meeting was held on May 2, 2012 at Akyab (Sittwe), the capital of Arakan State, but after June 8, 2012, the violence in Maungdaw between Rakhine and Rohingya, the function of JWGBTO meeting has been stopped till nearly one year period.
After the violence in Arakan, Burma, Teknaf-Maungdaw Border Trade, Maungdaw- Teknaf Transit Pass and Immigration Pass were also closed, said an official of Immigration.
In the 7th JWGBTO meeting, they (both sides) discussed about how they are able for expansion of border trade in future. Some of the points, they discussed in the meeting were as follows: Bangladeshi businessmen are allowed for three days to visit Akyab, they can carry Taka 50,000 per each, they can use Bangladeshi mobiles and laptop in Akyab, to open L/C, to open border market, Burma will export chick pea to Bangladesh for the month of Ramadan, tax free goods to export to Burma from Bangladesh and to fix date for next 8th JWGBTO meeting, said a Bangladeshi officer named Mohammed Nurul Boshir.
