BGB seizes shrimps and polyethylene bags from border

Teknaf, Banglaesh: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized shrimps and polyethylene bags from Burma-Bangladesh border July 26 while being smuggled to Bangladesh, according to BGB source.  “The BGB personnel conducted operation on July 26 at Hessar (Khal) river and Puraton transit gate and seized 230 kg of shrimps, 8 plastic drums, one engine boat and 7,000 polyethylene bags which came from Burma.”

Polyethylene bags are banned in Bangladesh since long because of destroying upper soil, said a trader named Salim from Chittagong.

The BGB also seized 70 kg of vermicelli (Sanmai),120 kg of potato while being smuggled to Burma. The seized goods are worth of Taka 240, 630, an aide of BGB said from Teknaf.

Since the beginning of this month, essential goods such as—onions, garlics, Sanmai (vermicelli), powder milk, sugar, wheat, Suggi, potatoes, soaps, dates and  various kinds of vegetables have been smuggling to Burma ahead of fasting ( Ramadan) month, said a trader from Teknaf.

From Burma side, Yaba tablets, beer, wine and liquor are being smuggled to Bangladesh, BGB source said.

Lt Col Zahid Hassana of 42 BGB Battalion of Teknaf said that to curb the smuggling from both countries (from and to), they increased BGB personnel in Border areas.
