Woman held with Yaba tablets in Burma-Bangladesh border

Teknaf, Bangladesh: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a woman with 7,115 Yaba tablets near Damdamia Check-Post on Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway in Teknaf upazila, yesterday, according to BGB official.
“The arrestee is identified as—Ms Fatema Begum (35), wife of Abdul Amin of Maheshkhalia in Teknaf.”

A BGB team from the check-post halted a Cox’s Bazar-bound passenger bus and seized the Yaba tablets from her possession, said Abu Jar Al Jahid, commanding officer of BGB-42 in Teknaf.

She was accompanied by her seven-year-old boy, the commander added.

Though the Bangladesh side, especially BGB, RAB (Rapid Action Battalion), police and other authorities concerned has been trying to curb the smuggling of Yaba tablets from Bangladesh-Burma border, the flow of Yabba to Bangladesh is not stopped, said a local trader named Hakim from Teknaf border town.

In Bangladesh even minor boys and women are involved in smuggling of Yaba and most of the College and University students are addicted in narcotic, trader Hakim added.

Mainly, Yaba is coming from Burma, so it is very important to crash the smugglers in Arakan, Burma, at first; otherwise, it will flow to Bangladesh. But, in Burma those are the officers that have the power to terminate the smuggling of Yaba, they themselves involve in Yaba business, said a businessman from Maungdaw preferring not to be named.

For example, two police officers U Thaung Tin and U Hla Thein accompanied by 3 others were unconditionally released on November 27, after fifteen months of detention at Hluntin Headquarters of Maungdaw Town. They were arrested with 160,000 Yaba tablets in Maungdaw last year. It is well-known to public, he added.
