Bangladesh Navy arrested 53 boat-people from Bay of Bengal

Teknaf, Bangladesh: Members of Bangladesh Navy arrested 53 boat –people from the Bay of Bengal near St. Martin’s island on 4th January while going to Malaysia, according to Bangladesh naval source.
“The law enforcers also seized a trawler while the navy personnel were patrolling the sea with a ship and seized the Burmese-flagged trawler ‘Anduja’ which was carrying 53 boat-people of Burma and Bangladesh.”

The arrestees included two human traffickers, women and men. The human traffickers were sending the people to Malaysia on the waterways, Hamidul Haq, a police aide from Teknaf said.

The arrestees and the trawler were handed over to Teknaf Police Station.

A fisherman from Shapuri Dip on condition of anonymity said, “There are many people are waiting to go to Malaysia through sea route from Shapuri Dip or Saint Martin Island.”
