Over 61,000 Yaba tablets seized at Teknaf border town of Bangladesh

Teknaf, Bangladesh: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) early yesterday seized over 61,000 pieces of Yaba tablets worth Tk 13 million yesterday midnight at Nitaungpara village in Burma-Bangladesh border, Teknaf upazila under the Cox’s Bazar district, which was being smuggled to Bangladesh from Burma, according to BGB official.

On being informed, BGB Commanding Officer Lt Col Abujar Al Jahid of 42 Battalion conducted a drive in the Naf River of Bangladesh- Burma border at around 1:30 am and recovered the pills, according to Maj Md Nazmus Sadat Soumya, deputy commander of the battalion.

However, sensing the presence of BGB personnel, the smugglers fled, the deputy commander more added.

Despite drives of police, RAB (Rappid Action Battalion), and Narcotic Control Department (NDC) from time to time, the drug business remains in the border areas because of any top drug trader or smuggler is yet to be nabbed, said a local leader from Teknaf preferring not to be named for security reason.

Apart from recent massive drive against the drug hub in Teknaf Coastal belt that led the shooting of two Yaba smugglers to death on April 27, 2014, raising the toll six in last one month.

Bangladesh is situated at the central point between the” golden triangle”- Burma, Thailand and Laos – and the “golden crescent”- Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran. Besides, the country is surrounded by some other major drug producing countries of Asia.

Bangladesh is trying to curb the smuggling of Yaba tablets in border areas with the cooperation of Burmese government.

According to UN estimation, over one million people are addicted to drugs in Bangladesh.

A man named Sultan (not real name) from border area said, “Maximum of the Yaba tablets come from Burma through timber traders of Taungggup Township.”

Therefore, it is very important to take measure to curb and control drug trafficking in the country, said a businessman from Teknaf.
