Prices of essential commodities increased and shortage at Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State: The prices of essential items including rice, dried chili, edible oil, vegetables and fish have been increased in kitchen markets in Maungdaw Townships because shortage of essential goods, Karim, a trader from Maungdaw said.
“Suddenly, the prices of essential commodities have been increased and skyrocketed in Maungdaw since at the end of April 2014”

When a local villager Hussain Uddin from Alay Than Kyaw paid a visit to the market on May 1, he found that a bag – 50 kg per bag- of rice is being sold at 18,000 to 19,000 Kyat while it was sold 15,000-16,000 Kyat in the second week of April, but a bag of normal rice is being sold at 15,000 to 16,000 Kyat per bag.

The villager also said that a kilo of dried chili is being sold at 2,100-2,200 Kyat, it was sold before at 1,500-1,600 Kyat.

However, the prices of different essential of goods are being increased in northern Arakan State day by day because of goods are shortage in the local markets. So, mostly poor Rohingya people are facing from their survival.

According to sources, farmers harvesting paddy and picking up chili from the cultivated lands which were growing up earlier but it is being late to bring for selling in the kitchen markets.

In order to keep the prices of essentials to reach to the common people, the Burmese government has not taken any step to stop the skyrocketing prices of the essentials, said a local elder from Maungdaw.
