Teknaf, Bangladesh: Burmese Border Guard Police (BGP) handed over thirty two Bangladeshi Released Prisoners (RP) to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on September 30, after a flag meeting held in Maungdaw, according to BGB official.
According to BGB sources, 7 members of BGB personnel led by Major Mohammed Nazamu Shadat Shumon of Teknaf Battalion No. 42 went to Maungdaw (Burma) and held a flag meeting with Burma border guard police (BGP), on September 30.
“The prisoners were released after the flag meeting between two countries –Burma and Bangladesh as the prisoners of Bangladesh had finished their various jail terms.”
From Burma side, 13 BGP members led by an immigration officer of Maungdaw — exit and entry point – participated at the flag meeting.
BGB source also said that it discussed different issues with BGP, regarding the Bangladesh-Burma border, Yaba smuggling and RP who have been languished in Burmese jail.
After discussion, BGP handed over 32 Bangladeshi RP to BGB, said a BGB officer who denied to be named.
Among the released prisoners, most of them were boat people and fishermen. They are hailed from Teknaf area, and other places of Cox’s Bazar district.
When asked a release prisoner named Hossain Ahamed of Nayapara over mobile phone, he said that he was arrested from the Naff River by border security police earlier while he was fishing in the Bangladesh territorial waters.
Hossain also said that many Bangladeshi woodcutters, boatpeople and fishermen have been languishing in Burmese jail, so far.
