Police uses old cases to extort money

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Maungdaw police arrested a businessman with old case of 2012 – Implicating with an arson attack – from Kanna gust house, near Maungdaw jetty, on October 20, according to Halim, a Human Rights Watchdog from Maungdaw.
Rafique son of Yasein from Kunna para (village), a businessman who was taking lease from the Tactical Operation Commands (TOC)’s prawn pounds every year, Halim said. “He is also the brother of Zubir, the village administration officer of Kunna para.”

Rafique came to Maungdaw from his village and staying in Kanna gust house for his prawn pounds leasing program to settle with concerned officers, Halim more added.

But, the surveillance officer of Maungdaw police station, U Htoo Htoo, arrested Rafique with allegation of leading and arson attack in 2012 and kept him at police station. The surveillance officer demand 10 million kyats for releasing from the so-called the leading and arson attack in 2012 case, said an officer from Maungdaw who denied to be named.

The police and Burma Border Guard Police (BGP) are trying to frame any case against Rohingyas to extort money, to send jail, torture till to die and destroying Rohingya property, said Ahmed, a politician from Maungdaw.

Recently, the government framed case against Rohingyas of having link with Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) and now again started to frame the old one –leading and arson attack in 2012 list- to harass and to destroy the Rohingyas from Arakan soil and to drive Rohingyas from their motherland. The government also trying to use 1982 citizenship law against Rohingya and also trying to write Bengali in the place of Rohingya in so-called population data collection Form, Ahmed said.
