BGP collects money from villagers in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burma’s Border Guard Police (BGP) has been collecting money from villagers for construction of their camps since February 1, this year, according to Ahmed Hussein, a community leader from the village.  “The BGP personnel of Aung Mingala camp of Maungdaw north are collecting Kyat 1,300 or one beam (Bilaili in Burmese) per house in Maung Nama village of Maungdaw Town since February 1.”

After collecting the money, beams and planks from the villagers, they will start construction of their camps by tacking forced labor from Rohingya villagers, Nur Alam, another local leader from village said.

Besides, the BGP personnel of BGP headquarters are also collecting Kyat 7,000 from a woodcutter per week of Kawar Bill (Kyigan Pyin) village of Maungdaw north. They are very poor villagers, said Kalu, a local woodcutter.

A local businessman Anwer said that BGP resumes works like as—former border security force (Nasaka). It was built only for discrimination of Rohingya community to flee Arakan state. Though the name is changed, but the works of BGP is the same of Nasaka.

The situation of Rohingya community in Arakan (Rakhine) state is very crucial because of central government, local Rakhine community and the local concerned authorities’ discriminations against the Rohingya community. Rohingyas have no jobs no money. At this circumstance, the BGP personnel’s collecting money from Rohingya villagers is unbearable, said  Hamid Hussein, a Rohingya youth from Maungdaw Town.
