Urgent action to stop Rohingya Genocide: Tun Khin, Rohingya activist

Tun Khin –Rohingya activist and the President of Burmese Rohingya Organization UK (BROUK) briefed deteriorating situation of Rohingya – threat of a new genocide and population at grave risk for additional mass atrocities and even genocide – to international community and urged an urgent action to stop Rohingya Genocide on April 28, at Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide at United State Memorial Holocaust Museum, according to BROUK information.

Tun Khin will receive the leadership award from Refugees International after this briefing, the information department said.

Tun Khin pointed out the revoking of white card which will affect Rohingya voting rights for the first time in Burma history on election.  He strongly mentioned government long time intention to wipe out from Burma decades of persecution and destruction which mentioned in a fact finding report [They want us all to go away] – the early warning signs of future mass atrocities included various acts targeting the Rohingya people such as physical violence against individuals, homes and businesses; physical segregation from other ethnic groups; widespread and unbridled hate speech; destruction of Rohingya mosques; and sexual violence against Rohingyas by Burmese Government, Jarmal, the BROUK General Secretary.

Director from Prevention and Genocide, Officials from US state department, Dan Sullivan from United to End Genocide, Simon from US Campaign for Burma and others were attended at the meeting.

Moreover, BROUK President Tun Khin and General Secretary Jarmal briefed US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Democracy, Human Rights and Labour at US State Department, Senate Foreign Relations Committee at Senate Building and briefed at Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.

The delegation highlighted update situation of Rohingyas in Arakan, current white card issue, Rohingya refugee’s situation outside Burma and Rohingya student Educations issue. The delegations strongly urged US Government the following: supporting UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to negotiate to get in Aid for Rohingya IDPs in Arakan; pressuring on Burmese government to restore Rohingya citizenship and to provide citizenship card in the place of white card; supporting International Independent Investigation where thousands of Rohingyas killed in 2012 June and October; providing education system for Rohingya students in Arakan through UN where Rohingya students are completely blocked to go to University from decades and resettling Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia where Rohingyas are in squalid conditions.

All the participants discussed about future strategy on Rohingya issue where the researchers’ team from the U.S. Holocaust Museum stated it left Burma “deeply concerned that so many preconditions for genocide are already in place. But there is still an opportunity to prevent this devastating outcome.”

“They want us all to go away,” said one Rohingya advocated, when asked what the Burmese government wants to do with them.

Similarly, Tun Khin briefed serious situation of Rohingya to International Rescue Committee, Global Centre for Justice, US mission to UN, EU mission to UN, OIC Ambassador to UN and UN Prevention for Genocide group in New York.

Tun Khin with photographer Greg Constantine, a photographer and author of the Documentary photo Project, Professor Danial Naujoks from  New York New School and Sarnata, Senior advisor on Human Rights from Refugees International speak on a panel at New York New school, Jarmal added.
