Police loot money from villager in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Maungdaw Police looted Kyat 300,000 from a villager of northern Maungdaw on July 3, over the allegation that he had involved in human trafficking, Hamid, a close relative of the victim.
“The victim is identified as—Hassan (35), hailed from Pawet Chaung village of Balu Khali (Thay Chaung) village tract of Maungdaw Township.”

On that day, at about 12:00 noon, a group of police from Maungdaw Town went to Pawet Chaung village and entered the Hassan’s home while he was  not in the home. The police are accompanied by Village admin officer – Kamal Hussain (48), son of Sher Moluk and Kamal collaborator – Ayub (30), son of Mohamed Shoffi of that village, Anwer, a village elder said.

After entering the home of Hassan, the police broke the cupboard and took away Kyat 300,000. Police alleged that Hassan was involved in human trafficking, so he must go to Maundaw Town to meet police officer; otherwise, he will be in trouble, Anwer more added.

After that, the police also entered Lalu home, another neighboring villager and examined the whole house and find nothing. He was also asked to go to Maungdaw to meet police officer, the next day.

According to villagers, the victims were not involved in human trafficking and they are farmers and have some properties. Police plan to extort money from them.

However, the victims did not go to Maungdaw to meet police officer for fear of arrest, so far, a villager said.
