BGP arrest 3 villagers, extort money in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State:  Burma’s Border Guard Police (BGP) arrested three villagers in Maungdaw north and extorted money from them over the allegation of holding Bangladeshi mobile phones and selling mobile cards, said an ex-school master preferring not to be named.  “The arrested villagers were identified as —Moulvi Rasshid Dullah (33) son of Mohamed Ismail and his brother Mofez Sell (22); and Ismail (35), son of Mohamed Akbar. They all are hailed from Maung Nama village tract of Maungdaw Township.”

A group of BGP from BGP Headquarters went to that village  on August 12, at about 8:00 pm and arrested the said three villagers over the accusation that they had been using Bangladeshi Mobile phones and selling mobile cards.

In fact, they were not using mobile phones; it is a deliberate accusation and action against the Rohingya community, said Younous, a relative of the victims.

However, the arrestees were released after taking Kyat 200,000 per each on the way to BGP headquarters, Younous more added.

The arrestees are well to do family so that the BGP personnel know that they can get money if the said villagers are arrested with an accusation. The BGP has well experience how to extort money from Rohingya villagers, said Annu Meah, a local elder form the village.

The concerned authorities take opportunity to give more harassment to the Rohingya villagers for not accepting greenlight cards when facing difficulties to support their family members after floods, he more added.
