12-family of hill tribes brought to Maungdaw south

Maungdaw, Arakan State: 12-family of hill tribes (Mro) was brought to Maungdaw south from Rathedaung Township on March 15, Mohin from Maungdaw said. They are being given temporally shelter nearby pagoda of Udaung village under the Myint Hlut village tract of Maungdaw Township, he further said.

According to villagers, the concerned authority had already seized lands from Rohingya villagers to build houses and to distribute the new settlers.

“We heard that the concerned authority will bring more hill tribes (Mro) and will settle on Rohingyas’ land,” the villagers more added.

Ahmed Meah, a local elder said, “We have been facing many difficulties here with Natala villagers who had been brought from upper Burma and Bangladesh and settled in northern Arakan state earlier.”

“If the authority brings new more hill tribes (Mro) or new settlers  in  the northern Arakan, we will lose more lands in future”, he more added.

Since 2008, the authorities in Arakan State had set up more Natala (model) villages in Maungdaw Township bringing new settlers from Bangladesh and upper Burma. For the settlement, authorities made houses by taking forced labor from Rohingya villagers after confiscating land from Rohingya farmers.

Rohingya farmers urge the concerned authority to stop the new settlement policy in northern Arakan, the elder further said.
