BGP extort money from Rohingya villagers

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burmese Border Guard Police (BGP) of Indin are harassing and extorting money from the Rohingya villagers alleging that Rohingya are using Bangladeshi cell phones and connecting with foreign countries, Mohin from Maungdaw said.  Recently, BGP personnel from Indin BGP camp are going to Shitar Pawrika (Kyauk Pun Dhu) village of Maungdaw south and arresting Rohingya villagers including women over the false allegations of using Bangladeshi mobile to extort money, he more said.

According to villagers, mostly Rohingya villagers are using Burmese cell phones in Arakan State, Burma as the network of Bangladesh is not available in Arakan State at the moment.

A woman said on condition of anonymity, “I was arrested and took Kyat 100,000 over the false allegation by police personnel of Indin on March 1, but I am using Burmese cell phone with Burmese Sim.”

Police and its informers moved at night in Rohingya village to find who are talking to foreign countries – Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. If the police got information from their informers, the villagers are arrested and beat in the spot without asking any question to get more money, the women added.

However, many villagers were arrested from Kyauk Pun Dhu village and released after taking huge bribes 100,000, 200,000 or 300,000 by police. It is depending on villagers who are rich and poor, said  Samir, another villager from the village.
