Prices of roofing materials increased in Maungdaw south

Maungdaw, Arakan State: The prices of roofing materials such as—thatches and stitched palm leaves are being increased in Maungdaw south this year, Mohin from Maungdaw said. This year, a pair of thatch bundle is being sold Kyat 10,000, but it was sold Kyat 5,000 last year and one thousands of stitched palm leaf is being sold over Kyat 50,000, but it was sold Kyat 30,000 last year, he more added.

According to villagers, mostly poor villagers are facing difficulties to roof their houses as rainy season will come soon and they are not able to buy thatch and stitched palm leaf with high price.

Kamal Uddin said, “I gets Kyat 4,000 to 5,000 per day after working, but, I need ten pairs of thatch bundles for roofing my house. I don’t know how to manage money for thatch.”

Many poor villagers are not able to buy thatches and stitched palm leaf for roofing for high price and will face problems in the coming rainy season, Kamal said.
