Prices of essential commodities increased at Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State: The prices of essential items including— rice, garlic, onion, dried chili, edible oil, vegetables and fishes have been increased at kitchen markets in Maungdaw Townships because of shortage of essentials, Mohin from Maungdaw south said.
Since first week of March 2016, the prices of essential commodities have been skyrocketed in Maungdaw south, he more added.

A villager Rahaman from Aley Than Kyaw village paid a visit to the Udaung village market on March 27 and he found that a bag – 50 kg per bag- of rice is being sold at 20,000 to 21,000 Kyat while it was sold 18,000-19,000 Kyat in the second week of January 2016, but a bag of normal rice is being sold at 16,000 to 17,000 Kyat per bag, a villager Sayed said.

Besides, a Viss of meat is being sold at Kyat 9,000 to 10,000 while it was sold at Kyat 8,000 to 8,500 one week ago; a Liter of soybean oil is being sold at Kyat 1,4000 while it was sold at Kyat 1,200  a few days ago and one kilo of onion is being sold at Kyat 1,300 to 1,400 when it had been sold at Kyat 1,200 earlier, the villager more added.

Another villager said that a kilo of garlic is being sold at 4,000 Kyat, but it was sold before at 3,000 Kyat. The fishes are also shortage in the kitchen markets as the Rohingya fishermen have been barred from going to Naff River and Bay of Bengal for fishing.

However, the prices of other different essentials— pulses, egg, chili, and vegetables— are also being increased in northern Arakan day by day because of goods shortage in the local markets. Mostly poor people are facing from their survival, another villager Nurul Huda said.

It is learnt that onion and garlic have been smuggled to Arakan State from through different points of Bangladesh, a local trader from border said.
