Rape is one of the tools being used for ethnic cleansing in northern Arakan – Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Rathedaung Townships – and sexual violence has reached marathon sizes in these areas. Arakan (Rakhine) is experiencing ethnic cleansing and risks becoming a Rwanda-like catastrophe.
There is already a steady process of ethnic cleansing underway in Arakan using starvation, gang rape, looting properties and the burning of villages.
The scale of gang rape of civilian women and girls as well as the awful nature of the rapes by armed men is completely aggressive.
A Rohingya survey team found that many women and girls in Maungdaw Township had experienced sexual assault since the security forces began attacks against the villagers after October 9 attacks of three BGP camps by alleged Rohingya armed group.
They found that the central and state governments are covertly and overtly encouraging the security forces to destroy the Rohingya villages and to terrorize the whole community by using rape against the women.
It can take many forms— visibly killing villagers including elderly people, women and children is the most extreme and also raping women, destruction of properties, destruction of mosques, madrasas (religious schools) and burning of homes.
The international community should come forwards to give protection to vulnerable Rohingya people and wants immediately to stop upheaval against Rohingya people.
