More Bangladeshi fishermen languishing in Burmese jail

More than seventy fishermen have been languishing in Burmese jail since six months, Nurul Islam a fisherman from Teknaf town said.
On November 6, last year, the said fishermen with three fishing trawlers went to Bay of Bengal for fishing and they were caught by heavy winds and were drifted to Burma side and then they were arrested by Burmese Navy, Islam added.

According to relatives of the fishermen, the family members of the fishermen have been trying to bring them from the Burmese jail to Bangladesh through the concerned authorities of Bangladesh but they failed.

Osman Goni, a fishing boat-owner said, they complained to the concerned authorities regarding the matter on November 30, 2016 that 74 fishermen were caught by Burmese Navy due to they were drifted to Burma side by strong winds in the Bay of Bengal.

The concerned authorities of Bangladesh talked with Burmese government to be released the said fishermen but the Burmese government didn’t release them till now, Osman added.

Similarly, other Bangladeshi fishermen including woodcutters have been languishing in different jails of Burma, sources said.

However, the family members of the fishermen urge the Burmese government to release them as early as possible. They also request to the Bangladesh government to bring all fishermen who have been languishing in Burmese jail without trials, according to family members’ statement.
