First Rohingya journalist pass away

Mr. Fayas Ahmed, the Chief Editor of Kaladan Press Network (KPN) – the first Rohingya news agency dedicated for Rohingya media since 2001 and the first Rohingya journalist – passed away with heart attacked on July 30, 2017 (Sunday) at 23:54 hour in Chittagong Metropolitan Hospital, a private medical hospital in Chittagong. He left behind his wife, 6 sons, 5 daughters and grandchildren.

He was also the first Rohingya journalist who signatories on behalf of Kaladan Press Network (KPN) – First Rohingya News Agency [ Since 2001] to found Burma News International (BNI) and working as journalist since Kaladan Press network was established by some Rohingya elders from Chittagong.

Mr. Fayas Ahmed, the son of Late Maulana Husain Ahmed, born in 1951, at MI para (Yinma Village) in Taung Bazaar, Buthidaung Township. At his childhood, he studied in the State Middle School, Taung Bazaar and matriculated from State High School Buthidaung. He studied higher education in Bassein Degree College for first year and move to Sittway Intermediate College for second year, the remaining years for graduation in Maulamyine Degree College. He was graduated from Maulamyine Degree College with B.Sc. (Marine Biology).

Then he joined in state’s schools as a teacher. He served as a Primary Assistance Teacher (PAT) in the State Primary School Zedibyin and State Middle School Taung Bazaar and till he left the country in 1985, he was a Senior Assistance Teacher (SAT) in the State High School, Buthidaung.

He has to leave his job, his family, all his nears and dears, his home and his country in 1985 to escape the arrest and persecution of Military Intelligence Service (MIS) in Burma, crossed the border and took refuge in Bangladesh.

When he arrived at Chittagong, joined to Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) as ordinary member to fight for Rohingya rights. Later he became member of Central Committee of RSO and member of Central Executive Member of Arakan Rohingya Islamic Front (ARIF) and later when the ARIF emerged into the Arakan Rohingya National Organization (ARNO) he also became one of the members of Central Executive Committee of ARNO.

From ARNO, he joined Kaladan Press Network and served as a journalist till he died.

He was honest, simple, committed and dedicated. He was so dedicated that, most of us detached ourselves or try to detach from the organization in many times for various reasons but it was only Mr. Fayas Ahmed who never detached or try to detach from the organization till his death.
