Buddhist monk arrested with Yaba in Bandarban

Bandarban, Bangladesh: A Buddhist monk was arrested with Yaba by NSI (National Security Intelligence) and DB (Detective Branch) police yesterday in the evening from a residential hotel of Bandarban, according to Aziz, our correspondent. The arrested Buddhist monk – Twai Cho Wa (Tun Shwe Wa), 30, as per police record – said that he lives at Combonia village of Gozolia union of Bandarban District of Bangladesh, police official said

“Police seized 300 pieces of Yaba tablets worth estimated Taka 300,000.”

According to DB police officer Rofiq Ullah, the Buddhist monk carried Yaba tablets from border area and sells in many different local areas. He has been involved in Yaba smuggling since long. Police believe that he is from Burma.

The monk was called to Bandarban by NSI and DB police men pretending as buyer from Lama. After arriving at Bandarban, he was staying at Hillbird Hotel of Bandarban Town in front of jeep station. He was arrested by NSI and DB police from the ground floor of the hotel. After interrogation, he was handed over to police.

The monk said that he was given the tablets for selling by a man named Shoila from Rohang Sari village of Bandarban, the police official said quoting the monk.

After Thailand crackdown human traffickers in Thailand recently, Bangladesh also has been giving pressure to human traffickers and Yaba smugglers. Many people were arrested and shot to death.  However, Yaba is still coming from Burma but human trafficking is going into shortening, said a local leader from Cox’s Bazar.
